THE SPIRITUALITY OF LOVE

And when His disciples James and John observed this, they said, Lord, do you wish us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, even as Elijah did? But He turned and rebuked and severely censured them. He said, You do not know of what sort of spirit you are…” (Luke 9:54-55)

Today, the focus is on THE LOVE OF GOD, being a spiritual reality in the believer! One may wonder why and how THE LOVE OF GOD is a spiritual reality of the believer in Christ. Don’t bother so much. Here you have it: if you read the opening Scripture with me, you’ll notice that I underlined the phrase, “…what sort of spirit you are…” This is the bottom line! This statement made by the LORD Jesus implies, that, He and His disciples were of a particular Spirit different from that of the world. That Spirit is no other but the Holy Spirit! See what 2 Timothy 1 verse 7 says of the Holy Spirit:

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but…of love…” (KJV).

The Holy Spirit, according to the same Scripture, though being the Spirit of power and of sound mind in the believer, is also the Spirit of love in the believer. No wonder Daddy Paul wrote in Romans 5 verse 5b that “…the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given to us” (KJV). Now, this is the beautiful reality of the believer: the believer in Christ has the ability to demonstrate and express the love of God, but the unbeliever cannot. This is why it is a spiritual reality and not a physical one. The unbeliever is a natural man and cannot grasp the things of the Spirit because they are spiritually discerned (See 1 Corinthians 2 verse 14). A natural man couldn’t have done what the LORD Jesus Christ did on the Cross by praying for those who crucified Him. The book of Hebrews gave us a clue to the possibility of such an action: Hebrews 9 verse 14 says He offered Himself up through the eternal Spirit, the Holy Spirit. So, the LORD could pray for His false accusers and killers because of the Holy Spirit.

The fruit of the Holy Spirit in the believer is the LOVE OF GOD: it is that one fruit which manifests the following eight characteristics found in Galatians 5 verse 22 to 23, which are: joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. According to Daddy Paul, it is the most excellent way, it is the icing on the cake on true spirituality, and it is the real, true, total and full expression of the knowledge of God (1 Corinthians 12:31, Ephesians 3:18,19). God is love, and if we are of God, then love should be our reality. This is the point of departure for many believers: for many believers, spiritual gifts are their reality, but the expression of the fruit of the Spirit, which is LOVE is not. As a matter of fact, many believers believe it is impossible to love like God. This can’t be true because the Bible says otherwise. AGAPE, the love of God is the spiritual reality of every believer, and every believer can walk in it. The key to walking in any spiritual reality is by acknowledging its reality as ours (Philemon 1:6). Therefore, if we can acknowledge the reality of the LOVE of God being shed abroad in our hearts, then ultimately we can walk in LOVE.

Finally, a visit to 1 Corinthians 13 is advised. Thanks for reading.
